Olympic Champion Elinor Barker returns to Llanishen High School

On Monday 5th September, 2016, former pupil and Olympic Champion Elinor Barker returned to Llanishen High School to meet pupils and staff alike. Less than a month earlier, Elinor formed part of the Great Britain squad in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the 31st Olympiad. Cycling in the Velodrome as part of the Women's Team Pursuit, she helped her team to clock a new World Record of 4:10.24 and in doing so became the 23rd Welsh Gold Medalist in Olympic history.

She took time out of her busy schedule to be part of an assembly based around pupils aiming for success. After learning how anything is possible from their very seats in the West Wing Hall, the pupils of Year 8 gave the ex-Llanishen student a rapturous applause as she made her surprise entrance. After answering numerous pupils (and staff!) questions, Elinor stayed at the end of the school day to have photos, sign autographs and to show off the all-important gold medal.

To be given the opportunity to meet an Olympic champion, to get hold the very medal given to her in Rio and to learn how her story began at the same school will surely inspire and excite the lucky pupils as they start their academic year.

Thanks must be given to Elinor, with everyone at Llanishen High wishing her all the very best for the next chapter in her success story!
